This is rather a simple tutorial... but I like the effect and that makes worth it :)I wrote this tut in photoshop CS2, but it's translatable [I followed my own tut in ps 7.0 to make sure ;)]
I started with this
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us >> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
You crop and prep your icon base like you want to. I cropped it and I sharped it once :)

step 1
The first layer that follows is a curves layer. so layer> new adjustment layer> curves. and set in overlay mode, opacity 100%.
It's rather a complicated layer.

channel: RGB
point 1: [input: 0] and [output: 0]
point 2: [input: 69] and [output: 28]
point 3: [input: 97] and [output: 87]
point 4: [input: 154] and [output: 140]
point 5: [input: 199] and [output: 198]
point 6: [input: 255] and [output: 255]

channel: red
point 1: [input: 0] and [output: 0]
point 2: [input: 132] and [output: 127]
point 3: [input: 147] and [output: 170]
point 4: [input: 255] and [output: 255]

channel: green
point 1: [input: 0] and [output: 0]
point 2: [input: 122] and [output: 151]
point 3: [input: 169] and [output: 176]
point 4: [input: 255] and [output: 255]

channel: blue
point 1: [input: 0] and [output: 0]
point 2: [input: 87] and [output: 2]
point 3: [input: 98] and [output: 125]
point 4: [input: 102] and [output: 210]
point 5: [input: 255] and [output: 255]

you can also download the curves layer [here] (you have to waite 20 sec before you can download the layer.)

step 2
I copied the base, set on the top and mode, multiply; opacity 100%

step 3
create a new layer and fill it with #e3f9fd
mode: saturation
opacity: 100%

step 4
new layer, fill with #11505c
mode: exclusion
opacity: 100%

step 5
copy again the base, bring it to the top.
mode: overlay
opacity: 100%

step 6
new fill layer: #fbf7d1
mode: soft light
opacity: 40%

step 7
copy base and Desaturate it (shift+ctrl+u) then fade your desaturating (shift+ctrl+f); edit> fade to 60%.
mode: screen
opacity: 50%

I'm proud to present my first tutorial, ok it isn't that difficult, but it's a start :p (using ps 7.0 )

from this picture to this

1. I first crop the image and duplicate the base twice. Set the second layer to soft light 100%, desaturate the top and set it to linear light 35%

2. then I add this between the copies of the base and set it to lighten 100%

3. add this above the previous layer, set it to multiply, 35%

4. the last add, this (by meleada ,, just a little changed) and set it to lighten 70%

5. I added my text (elegant, 33pt) and set it on soft light, 50%

your layers should look like this

I hope it wasn't that difficult :p
